Updates!

I haven’t properly updated this blog in so long. I’m sorry! uwu tl;dr for those who don’t follow my main blog— I started my career after graduating college, and took about six months to settle into my new life. I actually interviewed less than a week after I graduated, and then was hired immediately. As a heads up, I do update my main quite frequently with my thoughts on dolls— I just try to keep this painting blog mostly full of either WIP’s. finished commissions, and shop-related announcements.

Anyway, I’ve been painting quite frequently again for the past three months, and have gotten back into the swing of things. There are a couple of changes, events, and projects I’d like to do this year.

 1. Past Customer Appreciation Event
 2. Free Face-up Giveaway
 3. Attend more conventions
 4. Move to a more professional and automated shopfront (Storenvy?)
 5. Make resin eyes!

Recently, I’ve been really inspired by some of the really dynamic doll photographers on Flickr! So maybe this year, I can strive to take more interesting photos too. :> Thanks for reading and sticking with me this long— I hope you guys are just as excited as I am for 2014!

Regards,

Chien

PS: I queued up a bunch of WIP’s photos from my main to this blog— they’re from as old as March of last year! Please enjoy if you haven’t seen them yet. <3 If you have, thanks for watching my main blog!

Shop Closing Announcement

Hello everyone! I’ve decided that after I finish this current batch of face-ups, I’m going to close up shop for a while. The biggest reason behind this is actually that I’ve had my airbrush for almost a year now, but have still barely broken it in because I’ve been doing face-ups. Feels like such a shame, considering I invested so much money into it but haven’t gotten to really enjoy using it!

I have decided that I want to concentrate on practicing with it for a while by doing face-ups for myself, my family (sister has dolls, some relatives are interested in getting started with some too— exciting for me!), and close friends. I will still, however, do the free face-up giveaway this year— maybe two more times before the year is over.

I may or may not open shop next year, as a result. We shall see! Things may change. Thanks for your support and patience.

Anyway, I think I’ll do the next free face-up giveaway mid-August. More info then!

Starbolins Online Shop

My sister suggested setting up a shop today, so I did. What do you guys think? It doesn’t work (you can try, but I’ll cancel your order) because it’s not fully set up yet. I know that a couple of artists have moved their commissions off of places like forums and websites and set up webshops too. I’m considering switching to this also since being limited to painting only for the DoA crowd does not seem best for business (I have my slow months too, after all, where I don’t get any commissions). Plus, the PM system on DoA is cranky sometimes haha! :)

If I get this shop up and running properly, I can set it to restock to 5 face-ups a month (first Sunday of each month?) and people can purchase their face-up on the shop easy-peasy. I’ll figure out some kind of wait-list system. I’ve had a lot of people flake on me in the past year (eeeeek) and I’ve had many friends suggest to me that I should start doing deposits so that people will take their waitlist position more seriously.

So maybe instead I can do something where people can buy their $5 waitlist position and then pay the rest of the face-up later after their doll has been shipped to me and I’ve started work on it. Shipping will then be invoiced separately as usual. Also, communication will then be moved to email— which is nice in a way too because I have a smartphone so I know right away when I get emails.

The nice thing about the shop too is that it’s a place where I can put up my repaints for sale and other things. I actually do have a few extra dolls and parts hanging around, so it wouldn’t hurt to have somewhere to sell it nicely with a good checkout system.

Just a thought, anyway. Etsy and Ebay are great for bringing over traffic to find your stuff though. However, I think I could possibly get by through posting up my stuff on Flickr? Maybe. Hmmm.

If I do get this shop up and running, I’ll try to think of some kind of promotion for it as an incentive. :)

Thanks for reading! Please let me know if you have any thoughts on this, actually. There aren’t that many face-up artists out there with webshops, so I don’t really know how well it works for the customers and the artists.

Free Face-up Opportunity

Hey everyone! Just wanted to say that because recently I’ve started painting vinyl dolls, I’ve become more interested in Dollfie Dream style heads. Please message me if you have a Dollfie Dream style head (Volks, SQ Lab) and maybe we can work something out. Since I have not painted one before, I am unable to guarantee how good the results will be— hence why the face-up will be free. : )

TOYCHILD!
Thank you everyone for participating! It was a lot of fun and I am happy there were so many participants. True to my word, of course, another face-up giveaway opportunity will come up within the next six months. There will be at least two face-up giveaways a year— maybe even three or four! I can’t do too many though, because that would be unfair to my customers to start handing out free face-ups like candy on Halloween. :)
If you have any feedback on the giveaway, feel free to contact me and I’ll try to adjust the rules next time around!

Chien’s Starbolins Face-up Giveaway #1
Hello everyone! As promised, I am doing a face-up giveaway since this blog has reached fifty followers. It took me time to think about how long the giveaway should be, what the terms are, and how often I’d have one of these. After this giveaway is completed, I could perhaps change up the rules next time around based off of feedback! Regardless, here are the details:
Recent examples of my work can be found here on Tumblr
Reblog once to enter the face-up giveaway (likes do not count as entries)
Customers with in-progress heads or on wait-list may also enter
Winner will be selected with a random number generator after 1/28/12
There will be only one winner for Giveaway #1
Please keep your ask box open so that I may contact you if you win
Shipping is paid both ways by winner
Face-up removal is $5 (I do this to protect myself because I have received heads that were stained by factory face-ups)
Winner wins one face-up + one pair of installed eyelashes (from my stock)
If winner is already on my wait-list or has a face-up in-progress by me, the one face-up + stock eyelash installment will be free
I will not copy another face-up artist’s work out of respect for the artist
Turnaround time is four weeks when slot is reached during work period
Winner will be placed on slots list for shop just like any other normal customer
Basically, all face-up shop rules apply to this giveaway, so if you are entering it is probably a good idea to read over my shop rules. I have not decided how often I am going to do face-up giveaways, but as of right now I am leaning towards two a year. The next one should be at least six months from now, then. I think this will only change if I get a lot more followers to make the chances of winning face-ups about the same even if the people watching the blog grows.
This means maybe one to two a year for roughly fifty followers, then possibly two to four a year if around one hundred followers. I can’t guarantee this though, because it all really depends on my normal face-up shop schedule as I don’t jeopardize my work with normal customers for the sake of giveaways.
Good luck! <3

Man, time sure flies! I’m really happy with the response from this giveaway, haha. We’re at 112 followers now, and I have to honor my word so that means there will be at least one more giveaway in about six months. Maybe a third one next December? Hope that sounds nice and fair. : ) Also, I receive my airbrush tomorrow— then I’ll get to work with practicing with that, since I haven’t received any commissions for this month yet (customers appear to be pretty busy this month ; D it’s cool, yo). Maybe in a while I’ll be able to offer parts blushing and resin matching! I’m very excited.

snowgray - PKF Ante

At least I think it’s a PKF Ante! I get lost with Fairyland’s sizing sometimes. Owner requested very specific eyebrows, along with color palette (dark brown eyebrows, black eyelashes, light blush, pink/natural lips). Haven’t painted on such a teeny head in a while! Did not have any wigs to fit.

Edit: Found wig in box head was shipped in and took new photos. :)

Oh my goodness. Your work is absolutely incredible…

Thank you very much for your kind words! It was really interesting painting on such a small head— I hadn’t done it in a while.

Also, heads up to everyone else— I’m at 97 followers now. Three more and I’ll have to uphold my promise of holding face-up giveaways more often, haha! Whoops. :p

Edit: Make that two more…

Oh! Okay, Let’s Talk Face-up Giveaway

Fifty followers has been reached! That’s great. I’ll write up the rules for the face-up giveaway and get those up when I can, then. : ) I’ll only do one to two face-up giveaways a year, so I’m trying to figure out if I should make the entry period longer or shorter.

Any thoughts? Longer would enable more people to join, but the BJD hobby isn’t that big that I expect to have that many stragglers come around if I leave it open for, say, two months. Shorter may be enough for everyone since there’s only a hair over fifty followers, but since the next giveaway after that may not be for another year maybe that’s not good either.

I’d really love hear any ideas if you all have any, since you’re one or two of you are going to win a free face-up, haha!

By the way, here’s the Unoa L-bi girl I did for the demo at PMX a few weeks ago. I had a really good time there, and learned a lot about BJDs! That may seem weird to hear from someone who has been in this hobby for so long and paints dolls too, but I really did learn a lot. There was a lot of really interesting information about the curing of dolls, the grit of resin, tips and tricks on sanding, and even the chemistry of resin thanks to a chemist being part of the panel.
It seems like a shame to not put eyelashes in her, but this is my go-to head for face-up demos because the audience gets a kick out of seeing me pop a completed head that I worked on in front of them immediately onto Bart with some eyes. It’s really gratifying! So sadly, this face-up will be gone soon too if I do more face-up demonstrations at conventions. I might be doing one at ALA, but that’s not at all a concrete thing at all! I’m still waiting on hearing back, haha.
Almost at fifty followers! :) Once again, if I hit fifty followers on Tumblr I’ll host a face-up giveaway twice a year. As a result, I get excited when I see the number of followers go up for this blog.

Pictureless Announcement

I’m considering after I reach fifty followers on Tumblr, I’ll start the seasonal face-up giveaway as a thanks for the support I’ve received over the years in this hobby.

I’m planning on doing at least two a year depending on how busy I am, and I still do not know what would be a fair length of time to run them to allow people ample time to hear about it to reblog. While it is unfortunate that it will force people who want a free face-up to join Tumblr, it feels like the most organized and easiest way for me to do it instead of having it be across various websites (Flickr, Twitter, DoA, and so on) to make sure EVERY interested party will be ultimately notified.

The reason why I don’t want to do this too often— which is why I’m thinking twice a year— is that it may tire me out or seem unfair to customers on a wait-list unless I time these giveaways just right. It’s suitable for right now because at this moment my wait-list is less than half full. Rough guidelines so far are that if a person wins, she will get a free face-up but shipping will still have to be on them unfortunately since doll’s are precious commodities that are collected internationally, and if the doll head must be cleaned there will still be a cleaning charge ($5, I do this to protect myself actually because I’ve received heads that have been stained by the company face-up and it’s tricky explaining that to owners) while eyelashes will be provided for free.

I’ll write an official, thoughtful, and more concise post about this when fifty followers happen then. : ) Till then— thanks for everything! Will update soon when I progress more with face-ups. The LLT head has been glossed, I just need to install eyelashes. I meant to install eyelashes tonight but then I almost got sticky fingers from his extremely glossy lips that were still drying! When will I ever learn to be hasty…? Not soon enough, it seems, haha. I managed to make myself leave it alone on this cold night to ensure that his thickly glossed lip layers will dry completely before I start assaulting his face with glue and tools again! The LTF and Migidoll have been recoated in the meantime.

Hopefully this means that tomorrow will bring more photos.

For anyone who is in the area and interested, I have been invited to do a face-up demonstration at PMX again this year. Tomorrow, I will be in the Marina Room at 4PM to paint dolls and answer questions at PMX 2011, located at the Hilton by LAX. This is the third face-up demonstration I’ve done— the first being at Cendoll 2010, which is where I ganked this picture from, and the second at PMX 2010. I think I’m not bad at giving demos, haha, but I guess that’s for the audience to decide! See you there, maybe. <3

How to Use the “Chien Paints” Tumblr and Twitter Effectively

Hello! If you are reading this, you are either a potential/current/future/past customer, or someone who is just interested in following a face-up artist’s work and dolls! Even if you are not any of those things, welcome! I have decided to write up a short guide to help people understand the purpose of this blog, along with how it works to complement its companion Twitter.

The purpose of this blog is to allow interested parties to view visual updates on face-ups that I am working on and of my own personal projects, along with allowing insight into my perspective as a face-up artist. So what you may see on this blog may be photos of what I worked on that day, completed face-ups, how I dressed my dolls for a meet-up, and other similar things.

In conjunction with this blog, interested parties may also choose to follow the companion Twitter. The purpose of the Twitter is to provide regular updates on nonvisual components to face-upping— such as putting up notices of when packages have been received or sent out, when eyelashes run out, if the weather is preventing face-ups, which doll heads have been cleaned and sealed, and so on. This Tumblr and Twitter have been set up so that when the Tumblr is updated, the content is crossposted to Twitter.

What this does is allow someone to follow only Twitter to access the nonvisual and visual updates to my work, and also allow someone to choose to follow only Tumblr for the visual updates to my work. You could also choose to follow both too! Up to you. :)

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me via the Ask Box on this Tumblr, or over Twitter. Thanks!
