sailorashes asked: Ahh, thank you so much! <3 That really helps a lot! I never thought about paying attention to the brow bone. :o The sculpt is actually a Resinsoul/Bobobie Ai. It's normally a girl head, but I'm turning it into a boy. I found some pictures of what the head looks like blank, and with a faceup if you would like to see them. :) I would like to give him sort of a hip young adult look. He is going to have short black hair and green eyes. I don't know if that helps at all, haha~
Hey! Sorry, took a while to reply because I’ve been sick. Ai’s head is very expressive— especially because the default makeup does so much nice shadowing underneath the brow bone, which makes the expression more severe. I think if you want a hip young adult look for a guy, you should keep the color palette fairly nude and use blush to contour beneath the brow bone and a bit under the cheekbones. Then use a hint of warm color— like a pomegranate color instead of a dolly pink color— for the inside of the eyes and on the apples of the cheeks to keep him looking fairly youthful. The eyebrows on the default Ai face-up are actually fairly thick by BJD standards and I think they would look good for a young adult man— plus straight-ish eyebrows are somewhat easy to paint. If you want him to look less groomed, make a few of the hairs extend outside the shape of the eyebrows tastefully. Visible eyeliner will make him look lively, which can contribute to a youthful look. So when painting the black liner, don’t just fill up the inner upper eyelid ridge— go beyond it a bit and wing it at the corners of his eyes. Blend in the black eyeliner with dark brown pastel on top of it, then fill in the outer part of his eyelid with some more dark brown pastel to make his eyes have depth.
I would keep his lips nude but maybe blush the upper lip to be a bit darker than the lower lip to keep his face dimensional, and maybe use a bit of darker than skintone paint to line the outer corners of his mouth to emphasize either a small smile or a calm neutral expression. Short black lower eyelashes painted in a V pattern may look good for him instead of just straight lower lashes, as it’ll keep him face-up interesting instead of basic. Paint those with a dark brown, and then blend them in with a layer of pastel that doesn’t extend past the eyelashes (if you extend them past the eyelashes it looks like smokey eye eyeshadow, if it doesn’t extend past the eyelashes then it emphasizes the color a bit and makes his eyes look more dimensional).
Does that sound good?
